People remember the singers and the actors but even though I loved those songs didn’t associate them with him always. Ibaadat's musical recreation of Shailendra's talent was a stunning and heart-warming pleasure! This biographical revue concept and its execution and the performance of the artistes were all truly exceptional making for a very memorable evening. The singing was unreal. Indeed, a very fitting homage to the lyrics of the genius. The conversational backdrop detailing the backstory or significance of various songs or facets of Shailendra's life provided an engaging, and touching, context. Shailendra - my most favourite poet-lyricist , ever since I began to understand the meaning behind the lyrics, instead of just humming the songs and though we lost him very early, his lyrical poems continued to amaze and inspire us all. Moreover, he was one of those who used Hindi words, rather than Urdu words and this was also emphatically mentioned in the program. Right from conception to planning and its execution was planned to perfection to the last minute. This has always been their high point. I am simply amazed at this mathematical punctuality they have mastered. The show always begins at 6.30 exact and ends at 9. I am amazed at their time management - such execution I have never seen in any stage shows and I have lost count of how many I did attend. Each and everybody in their team is an accomplished. The show began with the prayer Tu Pyar ka sagar hai, followed by his Tu zinda hai to Zindagi ki jeet pe yaqeen kar. It was my privilege to attend the Ibaadat event. As always, the event was hosted by you and your other team members with a certain grace and in a dignified manner. There was nothing loud about it. In hosting a programme of Shailendra's eminence, it is well-nigh impossible to do complete justice to his complete body of work; therefore, the lists of the best can always vary between different individuals. You did the job admirably with your compilation. I particularly liked your drawing attention to certain lyrics which are actually caught in the different folds of a song mentioned to us as antaras and which as listeners we more often than not completely miss. It was nice of you to highlight them like for instance you did with the song from Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai. It is news to me that this song had 24 antaras. I wonder what the others were as obviously all were not incorporated in the song in question. I understand that there is a time limit to be adhered to when holding programmes of this kind. At the same time, such programmes are a kind of tribute paid to that personality. It was nice of Amlaji and Dineshji to grace the stage and share some of their reminiscences about their dad. Had a really lovely evening. The musical event itself was one of the finest I have attended. Never before was a film personality brought to life like this. What came out was Shailendra's creative genius. It was a revelation that he pioneered Hindi lyrics, rather than Urdu, which was prevalent at that time. And what beautiful poetry and unforgettable songs that came out of it. In a short span of two and half hours, we were taken through moods of melancholy, romance, joy, patriotism, brotherly affection, optimism, devotion...a ride through the entire spectrum of human emotion. It actually speaks of the rich repertoire of one single man. It was interesting to know the background behind each song. For example, in the song, Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hain, I often wondered why were the words aaj phir marne ka irada hain added. It was revealed that marne ka irada was with the joy that was on the level of moksha...a joy that transcended life and death. I feel so happy that your mission to spread happiness through the power of poetry has got a large following with a jam-packed audience of 900 plus. People lined up in queue were raring to go and listen to your show. This brilliantly and effortlessly conducted programme will be permanently etched in our minds. Madhura Gururaj added more flavour with her dance on Waheeda Rehman's song of Piya tose naina laage re which enthralled the audience. Needless to say that I love the Ibaadat presentation on all poets and find the concept unique and thoroughly enjoyable. I have now watched and been part of several shows on Shailendra but each time I have come back wishing there was a little more. I know due to paucity of time it is not possible to include more songs but maybe Ibaadat can have two or three scripts with different sets of songs and poems which can be rotated. The insight we share in the show leans towards Shailendra’s life, patriotic poems and on some of his famous songs. Again, the wealth remains untouched due time constraints. Talking about poems the example of Tu zinda hai and the weightage he gives to Manzilon ko instead of ka is awesome. He was a cut above the others by the wealth of his knowledge gained by reading and his ability to use this knowledge in his songs. Another important facet worth a mention is his ability to write on even famous western song tunes without resorting to “tuk bandi”. Each line he wrote is meaningful and apt. His command on languages gave him the ability to throw in lines in regional languages to be part of his Hindi songs but of course in perfect relevance. In one instance he gives us a song with verses in Bangla, Marathi and Gujarati. (arre bhai nikal ke aa ghar se from New Delhi.). He even gives you a Punjabi flavor in Hindi with baari barsi khattan gaya from the same film and Marathi laavni with meri aur unki preet purani chal chal jaauya Mumbai la. But where he takes the cake is the use of French in his song which I think goes undiscovered except to a few discerning “La elle, la belle aa re, din hain pyare pyare, mon chou chou mon cherie, tu mera main teri”. Shailendra’s work can be summed up in the words of Perry Como’s song Killing me softly…Telling my whole life with her words. It is so difficult to hide one’s emotion when Shailendra’s words hit that sore nerve in our minds. Wounds caused by some real-life experiences that lie covered by times gone by and all it takes is a Shailendra song to touch that raw nerve and bring that emotion right on top, exposed to the people sitting around but we throw care to abandon and cannot help shed a tear. But I am going on rambling and must close here with a big big thank you to you Prithvi and Ibaadat through you. Once again, I am sure you would do more add more songs, more insights on his life, on his poems and songs etc., time permitting. But don’t mend what’s not broken and even if you keep the script as is, it’s just wonderful. Amla Shailendra (daughter of Shailendra)

An evening to remember. I have been regular at your shows for couple of years. Ibaadat team has unique format to remember and pay tribute to legendary lyricists with their body of work. It covered life and times of the matchless genius of Shailendra with seamless presentation of trivia interwoven with almost 80 songs and two poems...The special tracks crooned by famous singers of Mumbai and trustees (Prithvi, Naveen and Sangeeta) was the highlight.
