Somdatta Basu

Somdatta Basu is the Founder of Sargam, a music institute where she teaches Hindustani vocal and Kathak. She is a Masters in Economics from Viswabharati University, Shantiniketan, and completed her Sangeet Bisharad in both Hindustani Classical Music and Kathak. A gold medalist and a National Scholar in Kathak, she is a rare artist with dual mastery over dancing and singing. She had over 15 years of training under Smt. Sipra Bose of Lucknow Gharana (a disciple of Begum Akhtar and Naina Devi) and Shri Sujit Chakraborty and started her career as Kathak dancer under Shri Birju Maharaj and Shri Santosh Maharaj. She is an enlisted Doordarshan Artist. She has recently launched an album of Modern Bengali Songs -"Gaan Pakhi". She was the winner of Tara Bangla's "Eto Noy Shudhu Gaan", Aakash Bangla's "Bhalobashi Tai Gai" and Zee Saregama Middle East Pakistan , a finalist at Zee Bangla's Golden Voice, and awarded the Voice of Dubai by StarPlus. Somdatta has done playback in a Bengali movie along with Shaan. She has performed at various shows in India, USA, Dubai, Bangladesh and Kuwait. She is a lead singer of Dubai-based group "Srishti" and directs music for Malhaar Choir and Tapasya Dance Academy.
