Obaid is an acknowledged Urdu poet, writer and a respected Prosodian.
He began composing poems at an early age and secured first prize for Ghazal Writing in various college competitions. Obaid later did his M.A. (Urdu).
Obaid has been the General Secretary of All India Urdu Council. He is presently the Editor of the Urdu Channel (Monthly Literary Magazine) and his writings get published in leading Urdu magazines and newspapers. His forthcoming books include Laazawaal (poetry collection) and Arooz (Urdu prosody).
Obaid has received several awards including Meer Taqi Meer Award, Kaavya Bhooshan Award and Mirza Ghalib Award for Baitbaazi. He has recited in hundreds of mushairas across the country and on AIR/Vividh Bharati and various Urdu TV channels. He has also performed in stage shows.
He has recently started writing songs for Hindi films. This includes Ban Gayi Baat and Kuchh Log. His songs have been sung by Asha Bhosle, Sonu Nigam and Shaan.
